February’s First Fridays Opening: Sebastijan Jemec and Megan O’Hearn

In It Was Real To Us, both Jemec and O’Hearn alter original images to produce a “manufactured reality.” The photos quietly show how recorded history is held captive by the imagination and turned into something that is only loosely based on real-life experience. Not only is it all aesthetically stimulating, but it serves as a thoughtful reminder of how imperfect and unpredictable our human understanding actually is.

Please join us Friday, February 5, from 5:00-7:00pm. And dress warmly! We’ll be stocked up on coffee and hot chocolate for when you get there.

November’s First Fridays Opening: Dana Giacofci

Join us this Friday for the opening of our November installation- “Staycation” by Dana Giacofci.

Inspired by Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz–foreshadowing the end of a Gilded Age–Dana’s prints are an exploration of what happens when imagination and preoccupation assault otherwise routine repetitive travels along the highways of the everyday.

“6000 Instant Photographs from 2001 to 2009″ by James Ford

We’re very excited about October’s installation as our friend, James Ford, will be displaying a selection of his 6000+ Polaroid photographs, taken over a period of eight years. Narrowing it down to a mere 2000 (!), he’ll be displaying the photos on a wall-sized grid in chronological order in a way that not only proves his remarkable eye for photography but also his passion for both film and comics.

“Cumulatively, the photographs represent an ongoing work which functions as both observation and autobiography; the work is both lyrical and documentary, and contains portraits, landscapes, personal moments, famous landmarks, nostalgic instances, puzzling obscurities, messy fragments, eye-catching distractions, humorous gags, bacchanalian mistakes, and a few brief moments of unexpected beauty. This utterly disposable, imperfect, impermanent (and now largely extinct) medium allows us to capture brief and similarly impermanent moments and preserve them for a little while longer, and to share the experience with others.”

Join us on Friday, September 4 from 5:30-8:00pm for the opening reception for “FOLLY.” The show features the collaborative work of Corey Kitzke and Dave Moore and will be on display this month at the Garage with a partner show happening at Chop Suey Books in Richmond

Aside from the many possible forms and implications of the word FOLLY, it is also an actual place; you can physically go there. This show, and it’s continuation in (Richmond/Charlottesville) is about that place and all those other forms and implications..

Over the past three years a number of us have gathered periodically to draw.

At kitchen tables, in basement studios, on countertops, floors, porches, stray napkins at the bar, and elsewhere.

‘Partiers’ have included: John Bylander, Allyson Mellberg, Max Fenton, Patrick Costello, Jeremy Taylor, Johanna Drucker, Kristin Adolfson, Dave Moore, Greg Antrim Kelly, James Ford, Erik Carter, Sarah Lawson, Eliza Evans, and many (many) more

Hundreds of collaborative and unsigned works have been produced, collected and until now rested quietly in the plaid flanked shadows of a suitcase. (Nod to The Royal Art Lodge)

Adam Wolpa: Next Friday!

Adam Wolpa, a Grand Rapids-based artist and former UVA student, will be installing an amazing show at the Garage next week. Adam is one of our favorite artists, and we can’t describe how excited we are about this opening. I know there’s a lot going on next Friday, but come by next Friday, July 3rd between 5:30-7:30pm to see Adam’s new sound sculpture and collages. You won’t regret it!

“Fault Zones” by Jesse Wells: New work focused on the physical chasm between individuals exemplified during ambivalent and complex moments. With stunt doubles on fire and boxers embracing, this work seeks to highlight the quiet caught within the chaos, and people trying to come to grips with themselves and others.

Drawings and Sculpture by Kristin Smith: A collection of work about animals investigating the world that they live in. The pieces show a variety of creatures exploring strange habitats and forms, trying to make sense of their surroundings.
