“Grounds”: Paintings, Prints and Instillations by Kristin Smith
Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011In her first Charlottesville solo show, Kristin Smith returns with new work depicting an unnatural version of the natural world. Strange clouds and stalactites are the backdrop to unfamiliar plants and puddles formed by a mysterious substance. Revealed in cross-sections of the earth’s layers, this suspicious muck seeps and collects around the roots of plants that seem to survive in spite of their dripping surroundings. The show is inspired by nineteenth century infographs, unusual vegetation, and underground interiors.
